About the Code of Ethics

The NAR Code of Ethics was adopted in 1913 and was one of the first codifications of ethical duties adopted by any business group. The Code requires that Realtors® cooperate with each other to further clients’ best interests.

Code of Ethics Training

Realtors® are required to complete two and a half hours of ethics training for each three-year ethics cycle. The current cycle runs from March 1, 2022, to Dec. 31, 2024.

Ethics training courses must meet specific learning objectives and criteria established by the National Association of Realtors®.

Realtors® can complete their training in any of the following ways:

  1. Complete an NAR online course.
  2. Complete a course through your local association.
  3. Complete a course through another real estate school. Browse upcoming ethics courses.

If the course is not completed through NAR or your local association, you must provide the transcript from the approved course to your primary local association. Your primary local association is the only entity that can upload your Code of Ethics training.
