Lessons Learned From Long Island Divided

Back to Resources

A shocking undercover investigation of Realtors® in 2019 revealed widespread fair housing discrimination in Long Island, New York. Newsday’s three-year findings showed that Black testers experienced disparate treatment 49% of the time, compared with 39% for Hispanic and 19% for Asian testers when seen by the same agents as white buyers with the same housing requests in the same area and the same financial attributes.

PAR President Bill Lublin will be joined by Bill Dedman, one of the Newsday investigative reporters. Dedman discusses how the tests were conducted, the major findings, and the type of steering that was uncovered. He’ll also highlight what changes have occurred since this investigation and the strategies, training and resources available to ensure fair treatment of all customers.
