Realtors® ring for the Salvation Army
Realtors® across the state volunteered their time to help raise money for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign this month. Fourteen local associations teamed up with their local Salvation Army chapter to assist those in need.
Angela Young, second vice president of the Central Susquehanna Valley Board of Realtors®, has coordinated the volunteer efforts for her local board for the past several years.
“Our board really gets behind the Salvation Army Ring Day. We all come together for this one cause and our members are generous with their time,” Young said. “We had 16 offices in 14 locations across five counties from Berwick, to Danville, to Bloomsburg and Lewisburg. The offices adopt a location and cover the hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and together, they raised $4,000 for the Salvation Army. It was a phenomenal effort.”
Schuylkill County Board of Realtors® Community Service Project Co-chair Amy Humenansky said this was their association’s first year to volunteer to ring for the Salvation Army. “We decided this was a good way to give back to the community,” she said. “All of our clients are out holiday shopping, so it gives us some visibility in the community. And all of our members had a great time volunteering.”
Ring Day is an annual event that brings thousands of Realtors® to red kettles all over the country to collect donations that support local Salvation Army housing programs and more. It’s traditionally held on the first Friday of December.
Ring Day debuted in 2010 with a few hundred Minnesota and North Dakota Realtors® ringing bells on a single day. The event has grown each year as Realtors® from more states make this a Christmas tradition. The money raised at each kettle stays in the local community, funding Salvation Army programs such as food, rehabilitation and youth activities.
Local associations participating include:
- Allegheny Highland
- Beaver County
- Butler County
- Cambria Somerset
- Central Susquehanna Valley
- Fayette
- Greater Mercer
- Huntingdon County
- Lebanon County
- Luzerne County
- McKean County
- Reading-Berks
- Schuylkill County
- West Branch Valley
