Which cities’ homes have the smallest yards? Philly comes in at No. 6, according to a Lawnstarter comparison of the 2,000 biggest U.S. cities and their average yard sizes of single-family homes.
With a population of about 1.6 million, the City of Brotherly Love’s average yard size measures 0.019 acres (827.64 square feet). That’s roughly the size of four and a half standard parking spaces (180 square feet per space).
Narrowly missing the top five, Philly trails behind:
- Hoboken, New Jersey (0.0108 acres)
- Union City, New Jersey (0.0152 acres)
- San Francisco, California (0.0178 acres)
- Camden, New Jersey (0.0184 acres)
- West New York, New Jersey (0.01884 acres) (tie)
One other Pennsylvania city made the top 50 smallest yards. Chester, population 33,000, ranks No. 13, with an average yard acreage of 0.034 (1,481.04 square feet).
Nationally, the numbers show that homes in cities near the coast, especially in the Northeast, have the smallest yards. Six out of the top 10 cities are in New Jersey. Boston (0.020 acres), New York (0.022 acres), Atlantic City (0.028 acres) and Bayonne (0.029 acres) rounded out the top 10.
