Wintertime in Pennsylvania is cold and dark, but your home doesn’t have to be. Homeowners can warm up and brighten their homes with these seven lighting tips from interior designer Zoe Warren at PriceYourJob.co.uk.
1. Layer Lighting
“One of the most effective ways to create a cozy atmosphere is to layer your lighting,” Warren shares. “This involves using a combination of different types of lighting, such as ambient, task and accent lighting.”
What are the differences between the types of lighting?
- Ambient lighting provides overall illumination using ceiling lights, floor lamps or table lamps. Warm-toned bulbs can create a more inviting feel.
- Task lighting illuminates specific areas of focus, such as a reading nook or workspace. This can include desk lamps, pendant lights and under-cabinet lights. They should be bright to avoid eye strain.
- Accent lighting highlights specific features, such as artwork or plants, using fixtures such as wall sconces, spotlights and strip lights. Different angles can create different effects.
2. Warm Lighting
“Warm lighting, characterized by its yellowish hue, is a cornerstone of cozy interior design,” Warren notes. “It has the power to transform a space, making it feel warm and inviting, particularly during the colder months.”
Warm-toned bulbs are a great way to warm up your home and they provide more comfort than their cooler counterparts. Look for bulbs with a color temperature of 2700K or lower.
3. Dimmable Lighting
Dimmable lighting allows for versatility and customized ambiance. Brighter lights during the day can boost energy and productivity, while dimming them in the evening/night can promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.
Consider investing in dimmers for existing lights or opt for smart lighting systems that allow for remote control.
4. Use Lampshades
“Lampshades are often overlooked but play a crucial role in creating a cozy atmosphere,” Warren says. “By softening the light and directing it towards specific areas, lampshades can significantly enhance the ambiance of a room.”
Lampshades can be both functional and decorative. Consider your home’s overall style to help you decide which shade is the right fit.
5. Candles
Candles are perfect for creating a warm, cozy glow. Taller candles can create a dramatic effect, while tea lights offer a more subtle feel. Make them cozier by using candle holders or lanterns. Additionally, scented candles can help evoke different moods or create a specific ambiance.
6. Fairy Lights
“Fairy lights are a versatile and affordable way to add a touch of magic and whimsy to your home,” Warren adds. “Their soft, twinkling light can transform a space, creating a cozy and enchanting atmosphere.”
Some ways she suggests using fairy lights are by draping them along a mantelpiece, winding them around a headboard, stringing them across a window, outlining a doorway or creating a canopy over a bed.
7. Fireplaces
Fireplaces are the definition of warm and cozy, and they’re perfect for cold winters when you want both. Whether wood-burning, gas or electric, homeowners with fireplaces can enhance the cozy factor by adding a plush rug, soft blankets and comfortable seating around the fireplace.
