10 Ways to Save on Your Energy Bill This Summer
Summer is heating up, which means it’s time to cool down your home. Here are 10 ways to save money while you beat the heat, from Hippo Home Insurance.
1. Schedule a Home Energy Audit
“Home energy audits involve a home energy professional reviewing your home’s electric usage and determining ways to reduce your energy usage,” says Home Insights Expert Courtney Klosterman. “These audits uncover opportunities for upgrades with long-term benefits, like developing a smart home strategy with devices that can help improve energy efficiency. This includes tools like smart power strips which may reduce energy drain from devices on standby.”
By implementing home energy audit recommendations, homeowners can save an average of 5-30% on their annual energy bills.
2. Unplug Unused Electronics
Electronics draw in power even when turned off, increasing electric bills and sometimes posing fire risks or power outage risks. Unplugging TVs, gaming consoles, printers, coffee makers, phone chargers and more while they’re not in use can save up to $100 per year.
3. Clean Your Refrigerator
“Fridge condenser coils are responsible for maintaining an even temperature inside a fridge,” Klosterman notes. “Cleaning your refrigerator’s condenser coils and checking the temperature settings can help improve its lifespan and efficiency.”
4. Seal Air Leaks
Cracks and openings contribute to moisture problems, which can cause health problems and home structure problems. Sealing leaks helps keep air conditioning indoors and prevents your HVAC system from using more energy.
“Air sealing typically can save homeowners an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs or roughly 11% of their total energy bill,” Klosterman says.
5. Switch to LED Lightbulbs
LED lightbulbs reduce the risk of burns and are more energy efficient. Unlike traditional lightbulbs, LEDs generate minimal heat, helping to keep your home cool. They also have a lifespan that can last over 10 years, and they fit in the same sockets as your old lightbulbs.
Making the switch to LEDs can save homeowners an average of $225 annually.
6. Install Smart Thermostats
“The smart thermostat helps HVAC systems last longer by optimizing cooling cycles and preventing unnecessary wear and tear,” Klosterman shares. “This technology learns your routines and preferences, automatically adjusting temperatures throughout the day — even when you’re away. Utilizing smart home devices like a smart thermostat keeps you comfortable while also saving energy by preventing unnecessary cooling cycles.”
Smart thermostats can help save up to 10% annually on heating and cooling costs.
7. Regularly Maintain Your AC
Regular maintenance on your air conditioning system helps prevent future repair expenses and allows homeowners to identify potential safety hazards before they become serious risks. Maintaining your system also removes dust and allergens that can pose health issues.
Regular maintenance can lower energy consumption by 5-15%.
8. Upgrade Your Blinds and Curtains
“To reduce energy usage, close blinds, drapes and curtains during the hottest part of the day,” Klosterman advises. “This is a simple way to help keep your home cool and minimize strain on your air conditioning system.”
“Smart management of window coverings can help reduce heat gain by up to 77%, potentially saving you on your annual cooling costs,” she adds.
9. Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Appliances
Energy-efficient appliances help save money and increase safety. They use less energy and generally have longer lifespans, and they often offer safety features such as automatic shut-off functions and improved insulation. Energy-efficient refrigerators and washing machines offer big savings potential.
Replacing old appliances with energy-efficient ones may save over $529 annually by 2030.
10. Implement Energy-Efficient Landscaping
“Keeping tree limbs and brush trimmed enhances energy efficiency while reducing fire risks,” Klosterman says. “Strategic landscaping can help prevent issues like overhanging branches that could damage your roof or siding during storms. Planting trees for shade and selecting native, low-maintenance plants can help homeowners lower their electric bills. Additionally, these choices contribute to environmental sustainability.”
