Sustainable Materials Popular in Homes

Whether for building or for decorating, sustainable materials have increased in popularity as people, especially younger homebuyers, have become more environmentally conscious. According to a 2023 NAR report, 48% of survey respondents found that clients were interested in sustainability.

Here are some more alternative sustainable materials popping up in homes and the benefits they bring to the table.

Cork

Harvesting cork from trees can be accomplished without damaging the tree itself, which makes it a more sustainable option than other woods. Cork is also a fully recyclable material. It’s naturally antimicrobial, waterproof and more child and pet-friendly due to its impact-resistant nature.

Cork can be used for flooring, wall paneling, light fixtures and more.

Stone

Stone is a natural resource that requires little maintenance. It’s friendly in a variety of climates and typically holds up well in the event of natural disasters. Stone is also fireproof. Because of its weight, it’s most sustainable when locally sourced to cut down on transportation-related pollution.

Stone adds a natural look and can be used for building homes, tiles, countertops, finishings, interior walls and fireplaces.

Bamboo

Bamboo is a renewable resource that is lightweight and fast-growing. Growing bamboo is more of a natural process than other woods, and it generates more oxygen than other trees. It is a durable and lasting material and an eco-friendly choice when sustainably produced and imported.

Bamboo can be a great and aesthetically pleasing choice for flooring, ceilings, wall treatments, doors, furniture and anywhere else you’d use wood.

Recycled Glass

Glass can be recycled infinitely, reused, repurposed and mixed with other materials. Recycling it does not decrease its durability, and there are countless uses for it inside and outside of homes.

Recycled glass can be used for countertops, tables, art and mosaics, decorations, landscaping and other projects that may involve tiles.
