Allentown Named One of the Most Affordable LGBTQ+-Friendly Communities
Allentown was just named one of the best and most affordable cities for the LGBTQ+ community.
According to realtor.com®, the area has a median listing price of $250,000 and a high percentage of same-sex couples.
“The Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton area has the third largest gay population in the state,” said local Realtor® Rob Ritter. “The Bradbury-Sullivan LGBTQ Community Center is the second largest in the state and they have incredible programming.”
Ritter added that the area has plenty of arts and culture to offer, as well as dining options.
“Plus, it’s affordable,” he added, nothing that he has had three LGBTQ+ clients relocating to the area from New York and New Jersey just this year. “I grew up in Allentown and one of the reasons I stayed here is that it’s so easily commutable. We are a hub, it’s easy to access Washington DC, New York City, Philly and the Jersey shore. Even if there aren’t enough arts and culture here for you, you can get to it quickly and I think people are seeing that.”
Another local Realtor®, Lyn Hufton, echoed Ritter’s praises of the Bradbury-Sullivan Center. “Along with the LGBTQ Business Council and many other smaller organizations, they help provide support by raising money for scholarships, housing and mental health support. Speaking from the viewpoint of an ally and having many friends and family members who are a part of the community, I think most would say that we have a very welcoming area, but there’s always will be room for improvement,” she said.
Hufton also said the area has many events to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, like Lehigh Valley Pride, fundraising galas, art exhibits, book readings and signings. The Diversity and Community Involvement Committee for the Greater Lehigh Valley Realtors®, which Hufton chairs, holds quarterly events for some of smaller organizations to help fill some of their needs as well, she said.
“The housing market for buyers is starting to ease up a bit, more houses are coming on and I think it’s getting a little easier for buyers,” she said. “We are still seeing multiple offers, but homes that are overpriced are now starting to sit a bit longer and we are seeing some price reductions for the first time in a quite awhile.”
“We have a vibrant LGBTQ+ community,” added Ritter.
The Greater Lehigh Valley Realtors® previously signed the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Diversity and LGBT Business Council’s Business Pledge, affirming that the association and its affiliated real estate businesses are LGBT-friendly and will ensure the celebration of diversity and inclusivity.
