Pa. Cities Applauded Nationally for Affordability

Both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia recently made realtor.com’s® list of the top 10 cities with the most homes listed for under $100,000.

Nabbing the top spot was Pittsburgh. With a median home sales price of just $168,000, it’s none too surprising that at press time, there were nearly 2,500 homes in the city listed for $100,000 and less. Thanks to the presence, or soon-to-be-presence, of many businesses, like Google and Microsoft, Pittsburgh is a hot market for young professionals who are looking for affordable homes.

Buyers searching for bargain homes won’t find many top-of-the-line options, however, there are many older, smaller homes available that may not have updated appliances or features, but have charm and durability available in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh was named the top city last year, and median home prices have actually dropped more than $10,000 compared to 2018.

Following Pittsburgh in seventh place was Philadelphia, which was two places higher than last year.

While the median home sale listing cost is pricier than Pittsburgh at $250,000, which is comparable to last year’s median home price, Philadelphia still had just over 1,000 homes listed for less than $100,000 at press time. Granted, most of the more affordable homes are not within walking distance to Center City, but there are still plenty of gems to be found in the city. In fact, a recent Philadelphia Inquirer article found that home prices across the City of Brotherly Love have risen 46% in the past seven years, so making this list is quite the feat. Philadelphia’s housing market also didn’t get hit as hard during the Great Recession, making the housing market much more stable than other cities.
