More homeowners remodeling

Last year, most people who were remodeling were either redoing their kitchen or their bathroom- or both.

Yet again, the bathroom and the kitchen topped the list of the most common remodeling jobs, according to the National Association of Home Builder’s Remodeling Market Index (RMI) survey, a report that surveys remodelers on their projects throughout the year. Bathrooms landed in first with 81 percent of remodelers doing at least one, followed by kitchens in second with 79 percent. While these two have usually been the most common, more remodelers said that they saw an increase in 2015, compared to previous years. These are the highest percentages either has seen since the beginning of the survey in 2001. Bathrooms, which have been the top choice on this list since 2010 in this survey, show no signs of slowing down.

Forty-nine percent of remodelers reported remodeling entire homes, 47 percent said room additions, and 36 percent said window or door replacements to round out the top five of the projects. On the other hand, finished attics (4 percent), historic preservation (10 percent) and an enclosed/added porch (16 percent) were the least likely remodeling projects of 2015.

Whole home remodeling jobs saw an increase this year, up 6 percent from 2014, and continuing to rise from a low point of 35 percent in 2011. This is the highest percentage it has been in the past decade.

Also, room additions saw an increase of 7 percent compared to 2014, the highest number it’s seen since 2005, when it hit 57 percent. However, room additions are still far from their peak of 70 percent in 2004.
