Homes near cemeteries sell for more, study finds
Would you have grave concerns about buying a home near a cemetery?
Real estate brokerage Redfin was dying to know if homes near cemeteries really sell for less, and their new report might surprise you.
“I See Dead People: Do Homes Near Cemeteries Sell Well?” reveals that homes may take longer to sell, but homes less than 50 feet away from a graveyard sell for more money.
“The numbers indicate that on average, homes near cemeteries are slightly smaller, but sell for more per square foot,” Redfin said on its website. “On average, homes closest to cemeteries sold for $162 per square foot, whereas homes located more than 500 yards away sold for $145 per square foot.”
Redfin analyzed 90 metropolitan areas on Oct. 15 and found the top five cities with the most homes for sale less than 100 yards away from a cemetery.
Philadelphia ranked second for cities that have the most homes for sale near cemeteries. According to Redfin, there are 157 homes for sale in Philadelphia near cemeteries.
Homes adjacent to cemeteries may take longer to find the right buyer, Redfin noted.
Homes less than 50 feet away from cemeteries took 48 days to sell, whereas those located more than 500 yards away took 39 days to sell, on average.
Some of the nation’s oldest cities topped the list:
